What was your very first handgun? How did it come to be your first? Did you purchase it? Inherited it? Do you still have it?
For me, my first handgun was a Ruger GP100 in .327 Magnum. I purchased it myself when I first started getting into firearms. It was during a massive panic and there was hardly ANYTHING on the shelves.
I was looking for a 357 Magnum but they were out of stock everywhere. After a few weeks of looking, I called a shop about 45 mintues me and they said they had one. I asked them to hold it and rushed out on a rainy evening after work to purchase it. I was SO excitited!
I got there and informed them that they were hold ing a Ruger GP100 in 357 Magnum for me. The clerk came back and said the they didn't have a 357 but only had a 327 Magnum. I had never heard of that chambering (being a newb). I asked if it was a good round and they said yes. So I purchased it!
It was a good, although somewhat esoteric, chambering but that actually worked to my favor. During this panic time, it was hard to find ANY ammo. But I was able to find .327 Magnum and .32s (which it also shot).
I kept that revolver for about a year or so. The panic died down and firearms and ammo weren't as scarce. I sold it and purchased.....a GP 100 in .357 Magnum! Which I still have and very much enjoy almost a decade later.
